Is gabapentin a worthwhile addition to a patient’s medical regimen when a patient is on other medications that can cause sedation?

Helpful question?

I have a 65 year old male with low back pain and right leg radicular pain for years. He doesn’t have any changes in the pain but it’s a significant bother. He’s on some meds that might contribute to sedation such as ambien and a muscle relaxant. He doesn’t have any side effects currently.

This is a generally typical situation and I’m wondering how useful it is to pursue gabapentin in this type of patient.
